Over a hundred shows.                                                              Almost a hundred girls.                                                                     From New York to Hong Kong. |
Opening night. There is nothing like attending a Hanson show opening night; there are no preconceived notions and no expectations other than the fact that you know you're going to have the time of your life. From the eerie, haunting opening song ("Optimistic") to hearing Underneath Acoustic and Underneath literally brought to life, even the curfew and short set of 16 songs couldn't have lessened the thrill of seeing a live, Hanson, electric show. The best part? Isaac rocking out on "Hand In Hand." It was definitely his night and he stole the show. (Heidi)
July 6th Atlanta, GA - Tabernacle
I finally got my first waiting-outside-for-hours-in-the-rain-for-Hanson experience (news flash: THIS SUCKS!) but nothing can ever compare to your hometown show. From watching Natalie dancing and clapping to "Lost Without Each Other" to Mackie spastically jumping all around the place to "If Only," it was fun to see how their family reacted to their music. (Heidi)
July 8th Washington DC - Warner Theater
I remember the old musty red theater chairs where we sat through Maria Mena, who said that she was from Norway but she was "nice," and then heard the craziest, most time-warped Hanson show in recent memory. I had heard they were playing the old skool stuff, but I never expected to hear "Look At You," in 2004, especially so souped-up and startlingly hot. A ponytailed Taylor sang us the classics, with extremely scarce snippets of Underneath. And when they played "MMMBop," the chandeliers shook, but don't chandeliers always shake, no matter where they are, when "MMMBop" is played? (Emily)
This was my first show of many on the tour, and lets just say my expectations were high, very high... From the trip there, between getting lost at BJ's to driving over curbs and making 7 point turns in parking garages it was definitely an event to get to. We drove past the theater a whole million times and then had our first valet experience. We got to the show enthralled and excited, the merchandise was as expected - Jessica and Kate were surprisingly clad in matching outfits, later to be the center of our giggles. Jess and her vodka and cranberry kept things interesting through opening acts. And let me tell you, after four years nothing is more refreshing than seeing Hanson live and electric, nevertheless opening with Optimistic, a song to later be expected with every city. Taylor wore his hair down, I noticed because the second the red guitar came out Jess and I clutched each other in a swirl of 1997 hormones and swoon. We were mush and it was complete Nirvana. The show's energy was amazing and 5th row never felt so good. The highlight, along with the red guitar, watching Mac on the balcony air guitaring and FREAKING out to LWEO, but even more so, not realizing it was him until mid August and yet I still declared to Jess that that kid would someday be my husband. Even better, getting lost by leaving the theater at 1 and getting back to it by 3, so much for going South for 2 hours.... *sigh*. Driving away from a gas pump while its still in the tank... and then on the way home, I turned to Jess in the drivers seat at a rough clocking of 4 am, to see her eyes bugged out, Hanson Hoodie over her head, 3 energy drinks empty at her side, windows rolled down to keep her awake in the cold, and the Spanish station blaring... all in all, after attempting to make it home and to work on time, the loss of 2 hours and stamina combined, we both had to call in sick... all for the love of Hanson (Priscilla)
July 10th Philadelphia, PA - The Electric Factory
My first show of the Underneath Tour. Road trip with Laura and Amanda- first time meeting the lovely Melanie. I'll never forget being completely humiliated because Isaac and Taylor saw me hanging out behind the venue like a groupie wannabe. But most of all, I won't forget that it was the most electrifying show to date. We were dancing in the balcony for 2 hours straight and Hand in Hand was especially inspired since the inspiration for the song happened to be in the audience. (Carrie)
Almost killing myself to hug you by throwing the hair dryer in the sink (Priscilla)
My first show of the tour. I remember putting off deciding what I was going to wear till 11PM the night before, and then spending forever deciding because it had to be PERFECT. (Meet and Greet, mind you.) Couldn't sleep too much the night before. But it had been like that ever since I got the email. We get to Philly. Wait outside in the heat. The sun burns my legs. After a while we can't take it anymore and go drive around looking for water and a bathroom. Long story short, everything takes longer than it should and I start to panic, thinking that I'll miss the meet and greet. Meet Kirsten and Toona and Nikki for the first time in person. Ashley comes out and gives me my sticker (ass... I wasn't very fond of him that day.) We eventually go inside. I'm nervous. It was all a blur. The room was very cool, with lots of posters and foozball tables and the like. I gave Zac my box of random crap. I talked to him a bit. Who knows what I said. Taylor's hair was pretty as he signed my shoes. He was really tiny, I noticed. Zac kept screaming at people but I don't remember what he was talking about. Yadda yadda yadda. Good times.
Cut to the concert. I fell in love with Ingram Hill (emphasis on the Justin Moore). By the time both opening acts were over, I was dying. 'Why must I be in pain to see Hanson semi close up when I just met them?' I asked myself. So Jefsie and I left and got food and water and sat down by the glowing walls. Oh what a difference that made. We immediately felt better and went and stood in the back when Hanson came on. Got to hear Optimistic for the first time. Heard A Song to Sing as Taylor's solo. Laughed at Isaac's fake ending in Hand In Hand. Laughed some more at the grapevine. Got to hear Man From Milwaukee, Jefsie's one wish. I discovered that the old songs made me happiest. Cut to after show. Justin, the huge ghetto-like boyfriend of Jefsie's sister, joined us by the buses and got Zac's attention many a time. Got my picture with Zac. (Oh how far I've come). Jefsie got her bag signed by both Taylor and Zac. I stared at Justin Moore as he flirted with girls. Good times, good times. Got home at 4am. (Liz)
July 11th Dewey Beach, DE - Bay Center
On our way from Philly to Delaware we got lost. AGAIN. I know, I know... well, we ended up at an airport and believe me breakfast from airport vending machines is disappointing... though I tried tasty cakes for the first time, and well, tasty. Later we ate at Denny’s and took bathroom photos that are THAT dumb, and ordered crazy amounts of side items from the breakfast menu at like 4 pm... We also almost off-roaded on the way there because jess was a crazy mofo and tried to dance to LWEO while doing 70 mph.... crazy BIATCH. Got there hella early for the show and didn't want to wait... parked got out, and then our lovely friend Erika dented a car, BAD. Priscilla documented it, and we moved our car next to Ben Jelen’s van where we slept all day. While we weren't looking for a mailbox, driving over curbs or ahemERIKAahem calling internet boyfriends from the car. The show was like a Bat Mitzvah so many young people and non fans fighting for a spot was ridiculous so I chilled in the back - danced, WITH MEL haha, it was a great relaxing show, in the midst of a busy week of shows.... I remember loving their solos and the Ingram Hill performance that night... It was a definitely different setting as a Hanson show. (Priscilla)
First Hanson show in the first state. Seven years in the making. Lots of people. Hot day. Event staff requesting people to sing Hanson songs while waiting for show. Show started late. Ben Jelen and Ingram supposedly weren't prepared. All teenie feelings finally released. Taylor: jumping up and down manically during "If Only" and "Runaway Run." Shouting "If you don't shake you ass to this one you ain't gonna get the chance" before singing LWEO. Issac: "More Than Anything" solo! Asking for major crowd participation before encore "Hey." Had crowd shout "HEY!" and point a finger at the stage whenever the guys sang "And I said Hey!" Smilied for days afterwards. Time of my life. (Melissa)
July 14th New York, NY - Irving Plaza
pouring rain and wearing the wrong shoes. swank cocktails at underbar beforehand. getting a 21+ bracelet for the first time ever. frankie muniz and ezra off in the vip balcony. baby high fives with ashley, whom I still don't like, despite the inherent cuteness of that moment. irritating girl in front of me who I wanted to tip over the edge of the balcony. wanting to jump isaac for "ain't no sunshine." wondering where the hell zac went for this taylor and isaac show. noticing the morph of taylor's 'thumper' problem into something much much worse...something involving the loss of control over both legs. mel and hanna and kirsten for the first time ever. finally, after long years, feeling like the band that I really, truly, loved was *back*. (Aileen)
Pouring down rain- Kristen and I ate dinner in the dry Chinese restaurant next door to Irving Plaza while hundreds of soaked fans stared at us through the windows. Somehow Kristen plants herself and gets us space along the balcony on Ike's side and I've never had such a perfect, unobstructed view at a Hanson show. The show was a little disappointing because it was so short and I thought the setlist was lacking... after Philly it just didn't live up to my expectations. (Carrie)
Taylor's antics amused me throughout the night. He fell on the ground, he threw his tambourine, he made silly poses. The best part was when he fell off the stage at the end of In The City. I suspect that he actually jumped but made it look like fans pulled him, since he was practically begging to be pulled offstage during the entire song. Zac was almost nonexistent during this show, although I did see him in the VIP section of the balcony during Maria Mena's performance. He was talking to Ashley Greyson and making funny head banging motions. In terms of the music, Look At You and Love Song were the biggest surprises. I usually don't like either of them, but they actually sounded quite good. (Mandy)
Getting lost around Union Square. Cigarettes in the rain before the show. Red umbrella amidst a sea of black ones. Soaked, cold, and miserable when I entered the venue, with Toona whom I had just met. Where was Zac? Was he even there? Was he backstage? No, wait. Zac's "the Walk." Taylor blowing his load in anticipation for that "on a flight to NYC" line. Ike's "Ain't No Sunshine." It was weird seeing Taylor play the electric guitar during "Dancin' in the Wind." Best Moment: "In the City." The sheer madness of everyone singing on top of their lungs, Taylor bouncing on stage, and actually being "in the city." Made for a nice number. I have this theory about this show and it's effects on Friday's show. During the slow numbers, the crowd was antsy. The buzz of conversations during slow songs was insane. NYC fans are insane. So, Friday, they nixed the slow songs, only letting about 4 slow songs go through the set-list. I danced. I sang. I met Aileen and Laura after the show. And I fell asleep on the cab ride to my sister's apartment. (Hanna)
New York number one was a huge step for me. Number one, I have never camped out for a Hanson show ever before, and two, my parents are uptight bitches who would never let me camp out for a show, nevertheless in NY anyways. When I asked them, I thought they were going to say no, but shockingly on a night of supposed thunderstorms I took a train to grand central, totally alone (a fear of mine in itself), hailed my very first taxi (alone again), and slept on Irving Drive with a blanket, purse, and my precious Hanson hoodie. In one night I learned how unsufficient my bladder is, how cold summer nights can get, how scary NY drunks are after midnight, and most importantly what it truly is to love something so much that it hurts. Eventually a huge sign reading 'Fuck Off' was enough to keep the drunks happy and silent of questions, and I managed to kick in a few hours of restless sleep to boot. However, standing in front of Taylor Hanson, right side of stage throughout one of the only homestate shows you attend, nevertheless having your favorite Hanson song dedicated to 'the overnight girls on the sidewalk' is more than worth it all, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. This was truly one of my favorite shows on the tour, and I earned every second of one of the most perfect nights ever. (Priscilla)
Newww York. Priscilla camped out and got front row (bitch. <3) Jefsie and I talked to her group for a while and then went to the end of the line. Made friends with two girls named Michelle and Liz. And Anne. And later another Liz. That was the day Hanson stupidly decided to just walk up to Irving Plaza's front door and got molested. I didn't see it happen and I think that's for the best. Lots and lots of rain. Our group had four umbrellas but I still ended up soaked. I gave up and just sat down. Didn't make much of a difference. But being wet was kind of nice once we got inside. We got a pretty good spot. On Isaac's side, of course. That just seemed to be our spot for the tour. But we found out how fun Isaac is to watch so it wasn't a bad thing. Ooh, wasn't this the show where Zac was up on the balcony ignoring us until someone screamed and he was all "WOOO!" back at us... that was fun. Priscilla made Taylor fall on top of her. ACCIDENTLY, I'm sure. Afterwards, they just ran by and went onto the bus. Taylor looked perplexed as he often does. Isaac was being dragged by. Zac... I don't really remember. I think he was "WOOOO"-ing at us some more. Oh, and a great comment from a nearby drunk: "TAYLOR HANSON'S NOT A VIRGIN?!" (Liz)
July 16th New York, NY - Irving Plaza
Way back in April or May when Laura and I planned this trip, I knew this journey was more about the New York fans for me than even the band. When Hanson comes to me, rather than the other way around, it feels like the sweet gesture of friends. When I book an airline ticket, it feels part homecoming with other fans and part carnival, with me as my own freak show (Just what was I capable of next?). Visiting New York, I felt like any shred of Hanson fanhood or even the obsession that I stand accused of silently in the eyes of family and friends was almost physically wrestled out of my grip and exposed, with the same silent accusation, as mere mild fascination in the eyes of New York fans.
I'm not sure if I feel relief about my Hanson fanhood (if you can even technically call it "fanhood" at this point) being brought down to size, or an unexplainable emptiness. During the show, I felt like I was attending someone else's birthday party and all the New York fans had presents addressed with their names. Just like at a party, I was happy for them, with them. But I felt some grief at the deflating of my sense, at concerts near the Great Lakes (I'm from Michigan), that every song was a personal keepsake. At the Irving Plaza show the songs almost served as a memento, a reminder of what has become past or gone. The exposure of an illusion.
The electrifying energy? Not intended for me. The high voltage setlist? Dedicated to New York fans, silly. Aren't you from Michigan? The unexpected Stevie Wonder cover? A final gesture of exclusive and unique appreciation for their new hometown fans. No room for, where are you from again?
I had crashed a party and so nothing was legally mine to take to heart. I don't even feel like I have the right to comment on the show, like it's not mine to reflect on. (Jackie)
too many "new york fans." back of the balcony, scaring off girl and boyfriend (who knew all the lyrics, and sang along) which accidentally earned me a much better view. nine dollar raspberry stoli and sprite. penny and me, ala taylor sans band. slightly more coordinated version of the blues brothers grape vine. bitter isaac epithets about his horrible love life of years gone by. an energy about this band that I’ve missed since tta 2000. lost without each other. squealing over 'signed sealed delivered' before anybody else knew what was coming. hearing signed sealed delivered. jackie and mel and claudia and kirsten and carrie and laura and hanna and yael. finally feeling as though I’d found myself a piece of the sane/interesting portion of the hanson fan community. standing around outside for far too long, for far too small a glimpse of those boys, yet somehow, still enjoying every moment. (Aileen)
hanging out with a guy in-the-closet hanson fan named stevie who eats skittles and keeps our place in line while me and his girlfriend are playing "typical teeny/stalker" on the other side of irving plaza, seeing natalie walk around with ezra in her arms..baby waving and saying hello to us in this adoraaaable little voice, being harassed by 14 years old teenies who have "zac" written all over their shoes, cd player, etc.. meeting toona for the first time.. turns out she's dressed tackier than me :P the clock mystery, french lessons while eating at "au bon coin", meeting htp co-worker laura motta for the first time! watching cartoon and odd lettuce-man episodes on a screen before the show. lol. frankie muniz playing on zac's drums, super crowd singing along during PENNY & ME (flight to NYC..), people having sex just beside me GROSS. hearing zac sing need you now for the first time, SEEING HANSON ON MY BIRTHDAY and visiting NYC for the first time! DUH I almost forgot. zac climbing on speakers at the end of the show to shake hands with the girls from France on the balcony. hmm.. THEY PLAYED MAN FROM MILWAUKEE! it wasn't the best show I’ve been too.. but just meeting toona and her friends and being in NYC to see hanson on my birthday.. was AWESOME! (Claudia)
Went with Yael, my best friend. Cut in line with Aileen and Laura. "You're a Hanson Virgin?" -Laura, to Yael. "He is. It's his first time. I hope it doesn't hurt, dude." - Me. Stand in the back, next to the stairs that lead to the balcony. Zac's "Need You Now." I wanted to bum-rush the stage and give him a huge hug during the ear monitor fiasco. Taylor, a piano, and Penny and Me. Lovely "gift" to NYC fans, which, btw, annoy me a little. Isaac's story behind "Hand in Hand." You know, sweetie, the best way to get back at her is to cover "Rape Me" by Nirvana. Also, your broken heart is no excuse to become a faux-whore. "Lost Without Each Other." There are no words to describe the feeling I got during the last "ARE YOU LISTENING?" Yes, yes I am. In other news, SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED. I squealed. I giggled. I jumped up and down. I danced. I sang. I was sweaty. I took off my shoes at one point. Standing around outside with Jackie, Laura, Toona, Aileen, Kirsten, and a bunch of people but I forget their names. Paying two bucks for a subway ride. Figured out that wasn't the station we had to be at. Two more bucks for the right train. Pizza afterwards. And a giddy, happy smile on my face. (Hanna)
Now this was the show of the ages. Made up for the first night x100. It was just like Philly only I was there with a larger gang and Laura scored us front row of the balcony facing the stage directly. Sadly, my most vivid memory of the night is when they turned the lights on in the balcony and Ike looked up and smiled at us the look during "Mmmbop." But I'll also never forget how Taylor's solo version of "Penny & Me" was so beautiful that I had to hold back tears. Probably the best Hanson show so far. (Carrie)
Spent the day wandering around the area and lying on concrete. And getting filmed for a documentary by a guy that said we were the most devoted fans ever (and he even had a band tattoo on his hand). While waiting by the back door, Natalie came up and tried to get Ezra to wave at us. Adorable, he was. So, the day was fun. But once we got inside, the sleep deprivation started to get to me. The girls behind me were total bitches. Everything made me want to cry. The show wasn't cheering me up for the most part. But towards the end, I started to cheer up. Signed, Sealed, Delivered... P&M as Taylor's solo. After the show... I wandered around trying to find starbucks, still feeling like crap. My mom found me and excitedly told me about how she had just seen Frankie Muniz. We didn't bother waiting for them to come out. (Liz)
Alas. Good show. Nothing too memorable. Though, the girl who was standing next to me threw Taylor edible undies and hit him in the head. Fucking amusing. (Priscilla)
July 17th Lancaster, PA - American Music Theatre
Looking back, I don't know why I made such a hassle about going to LANCASTER. As stated by my boyfriend when I mentioned that I was writing this paragraph: "FUCK LANCASTER PA." Hanson makes us do weird things, and that's why I sat on a bus for like 4 hours to see Hanson with people I didn't know. I got there and the first thing I was told is that Zac and Kate were on an amish carriage ride. This was going to be a great night, I was sure (did you catch the sarcasm?). The show wasn't half bad, they played some good songs, but me and my friend decided to walk out during MMMBop, because we hate the song. We went outside and waited by the bus before that got too bad, and then we went and hung out near Ben Shithead's bus, having his roadies take pictures of us. We looked up in a window and Isaac was waving his cellphone around; it turns out, some girl had offered to strip for him and he was angry because no one by that window was stripping. The night ended with that. Oh, the joys of Lancaster. (Kir)
July 19th Hyannis, MA - Cape Cod Melody Tent
A hanson show on my 20th birthday. Second Row. I couldn't see Isaac like at all, but that was ok. The backup guitarist really needed to move so I could see Zac! Taylor wished me happy birthday mid-verse of Where's the Love, and then proceeded to mess up the whole rest of the verse, and ended up singing the first verse twice. Taylor's solo was Love Me. My favorite Taylor solo. Happy Birthday to me! Then after the show I met Frankie Muniz and was so happy. (Katie)
July 20th Hampton Beach, NH - Hampton Beach Casino
BooBoo and I spent the day relaxing on the beach, while making many trips up and down the "boardwalk" to watch all of the silly girls with their silly clothes acting crazy over some silly band.
I received my first "meet and greet" pass for this show. Of course now it's nothing but a blur. I didn't say much of anything. All of the younger girls fought for their attention in the cheap autograph line. I stood back and tried to memorize every detail - while secretly envying all of the girls who weren't afraid to look and sound rather dumb. It was over before I knew it, but I did catch a glimpse of both Zac and Taylor giving their significant others kisses. I felt like a spy.
The boy and I spent most of the night out by the buses, socializing with the classiest gals around. We even had a photo shoot. I was impressed by the friendliness of all three of the guys at this show, for they came out numerous times to take pictures and sign autos with the fans. The show itself seemed rather dull in comparison to the earlier events - but good nevertheless. Like the rest of the night, the setlist is a blur. I do remember singing along to lots of MON-era songs, and watching many of the 20-something girls of the Hampton Beach Casino staff relive their childhood by dancing and singing to their old favorites.
After the show the boy and I bought some fireworks and had more fun on the beach. We even made a Hanson symbol in the sand. Eventually, it got washed away by the tide. (Sarah)
July 22nd Boston, MA - Avalon
On the way there, Priscilla spots the tour bus in some hotel parking lot. That was fun. We get there and we get filmed for the Lost Without Each Other video. And we also die from the heat. But it got better after a few hours. We watched Natalie walk around in cool cowboy boots. And we all crowded around the bus as everyone came off at once (so completely for the video). I met a slightly scary guy in his forties wearing a Hanson t-shirt and a watch with a picture of Zac in it. He was a bigger fan than I was. A girl near us told someone off by saying "YOU'RE JUST MMMJEALOUS!" and we all laughed.
We go inside- it's a huge air conditioned place with lots of lovely tables and whatnot. People pass out ice water which I thought was nice. It was a much nicer atmosphere than that dreadful NY2 show. (I thought). This is where I heard Weird for the first time. That was always my favorite video/song back in the day and it was amazing. This was also Taylor's Underneath solo... and Lost Without Each Other TWICE. mwahahaha. We had joked that they were starting the show so early so that they could play the song 34,346,508 times for the video. So we were happy. I had gotten closer to the stage and could see Isaac on the camera guy's monitor and got an idea of what the video would be like. This is also where I heard Hey for the first time this tour. But there was an annoying girl blocking my view in an attempt to get on camera so that kind of ruined it for me.
After the show! Zac came out first and ran onto the bus. We soon noticed that some girls were talking to someone up in a window in the back of the bus. Interesting, we thought. And a crowd started to form. Low and behold, it was Zac, signing autographs out of the window. Not a bad idea. This was full of fun Zac comments at rude people ("1, 2, 3- FUCK OFF!") and getting my ticket stub signed just for the hell of it. (Liz)
When you say Boston 04 I say: Fucking DRAMA. Who cares if the director of the LWEO video chose to put pretty people and an eclectic mix in the front for the video. Not me. But apparently it was the commotion that spread through the line like wildfire all day. And honestly? Between the fucking rude red sox fans, and million degree weather, I could care less. Besides the show was amazing and its the reason I can say I went to 13 shows and heard LWEO 14 times. I freaking love that song. It gets better though, watching Zac hang out the window signing shit for an hour was utterly amusing and I know Liz gave like, every detail about this cause it was her favorite show ever so I'm ending it now. PS. The ride home took 10 hours in traffic and ALL WE LISTENED TO WAS HANSON. (Priscilla)
July 24th Cincinatti, OH - Bogarts
This first show was so huge and amazing. It started with a bang, Taylor stepped onto the stage with his red guitar slung low on his hip and set in motion the craziness. The new mantle of guitar God fit him well. By the end of the second song, Taylor and the audience were already sweating. Taylor stood and faced the audience and there on his chest was a perfect, heart-shaped sweat stain. What an amazing sight, Taylor standing there his hands in his hair, his skin-tight shirt and his heart plainly visible for all to see. That in and of itself was a highlight. The only drawback to this evening was how obviously sick Zac was. You could tell that he was just not feeling well and Taylor had a bandage on the index finger of his right hand, so the show was a little mellower than the rest. (Stephanie)
July 25th St. Louis, MO - The Pageant Theatre
The Pageant Theatre is one of the greatest venues ever! Unfortunately, Zac was feeling even worse at this show. A few times, he was laying across his drums his face pale. And Taylor was madly shaking his obviously sore right hand. So, this show became the Ike show but not entirely by default. There are nights when the performer is so on that the rest of the people on stage sort of melt into the background. Well, this was one of those nights. Isaac was all over the place, playing better than average guitar solos, jumping off the drum riser, stepping to the front of the stage and making his version of guitar face, even doing more than one knee slide... Highlight of the night was hearing their cover of "Optimistic" for the first time. Taylor's wailing and keening literally made my knees weak, good thing I was sitting down! (Stephanie)
July 27th Nashville, TN - Ryman
Krystal had her first Meet & Greet. Someone out in front of the venue jumped up and down when she realized who I was and what I wrote. Zac seemed in better spirits. He came out in Elvis-style aviator glasses and seemed to have some spunk to him. The show was the first and last of this tour where I saw all three brothers do a solo. Taylor broke my heart (in a good way) and sang the song I most wanted to hear. There was something so amazing watching him sing, "Love Me" in Nashville. It felt so appropriate to hear that song played in the former home of the Grand Old Opry, knowing that Elvis had stood not too far from where Taylor sat all those years ago. (Stephanie)
If the Underneath Tour was my life Nashville would be the climax. It was amazing. Euphoric. Everything I ever wanted plus. I have a strong attachment to the city, probably because my name is Priscilla, after Presley and the whole Elvis thing, plus Taylor always comments on my name and its relation to Elvis and it makes me smile. I hhould hate this memory. Of Nashville, that is. The drive was legarthic and tiring and wore the fuck out of me. 21 hours. And seriously, poor Jess. I read 'Totally Taylor' word for word throughout the 21 hour drive. The best part of that 21 hours? Ending up in no other than, 'Promised Land, PA' to get our blown out tires changed. Hanson lyrics on our trip. Fantabulous. It was amusing, resltess but amusing. And nothing about Kentucky isn't amazing. We stopped at the sign and took pictures. Surely a memory. Downtown Nashville is confusing as fuck at midnight but other than that it was all worth it. I had second row and they opened with Every Word I Say. I think that says it all, my friends. A part of my soul was created that night. That is all. (Priscilla)
July 28th Indianapolis, IN - Egyptian Room
And once again into the fray. In Indianapolis, I took full advantage of the h.net early entry line and found myself on the second row. And despite all the pushing and shoving, there is something to be said about being sweated on by Taylor Hanson. Really, being that close to the stage, you lose the definition of the band. Their voices blend with the voices of the girls around you. But truly, there is also an interaction with the band itself when you are that close that is strange. I was so close I could have requested a song from Taylor. And really, that much eye contact during a show is bizarre. (Stephanie)
Indianapolis is the fucking most boring city I have ever seen. We got lost in a traffic circle, what stupid shit is that? Not to mention we walked 10 blocks the wrong way because some stupid bitch told us we were going the right way, though watching the faces on Jessica Hanson and Kate Tucker as we went to pay for merch and had our baby stuffed animals fall out of our purses was highly highly amusing. Plus, the show was killer. We hung in the back and danced all night. Engulfed in the music. It got better when Jess got drunk and danced like an ass to 'Broken Angel' next to Ashley Greyson, surely a memory that we will never forget. Plus, who can forget to mention how Taylor caught a hat in mid flight put it on and danced in it to 'In the City' right before following suit with a thong. I pray it was clean. Lets keep our Taylor clean of herpes please? (Priscilla)
waiting in line for almost 24 hours. making new friends. abusing the firehouse facilities. trips to starbucks for water. getting punched in the face was the downfall but i wasn't about to give up second row after all that work. i loved it i had an amazing time with my new friends jamming to the old favorites and loving the new ones. i had an awesome time and almost got to meet taylor but was struck dumb seeing him up close for the first time ever since being a fan ('97 baby). (Lauren E.)
July 30th Detroit, MI - State Theatre
Huge beautiful theater. Long set list. And on the way we found a street named 'Fangboner' and painted it on our windows in car paint. I think that says it all. (Priscilla)
July 31st Chicago, IL - Navy Pier
Dream Girl: Originally, I did not recognize this song although it felt familiar. A possible cover? A version of Feelin' Alright? Back at home, I replayed the hanson.net DVD 2.1 and heard the mellow and charming notes, making the connection. Just extremely pleasant as the cool night air and the white tent of the Skyline Stage combined to make it feel like the summer outdoor concert that it was.
After "Crazy Beautiful" (15th song), Zac steps down to tap Taylor. Taylor then signals two fingers to Isaac and announces, "Boys and girls, we would like to play all night for you, but the next song is going to have to be our last" (something along these lines).
Lost without Each Other: Before the show, the adorable girls next to us told me that the song they were hoping to hear was, "Well, we don't know the name, but it's track #6" and they held up an open hand and a thumb. When the band launched the unmistakable opening beats of this song, I tapped them and grinning, we all held up the same five fingers and thumb. They were ecstatic. Despite the concert being cut short, I was so happy that Hanson managed to squeeze this one in for these fans. Note: I told the girls, the song I wanted to hear was "Every Word I Say" which they were not aware of. After our conversation they were resolved to go out and purchase the "Penny and Me" single very soon. (Jackie)
Sweltering summer Chicago heat among giant crowd of weekend water enthusiasts, all looking at the huge tent/stage wondering who the hell was actually playing that sounded so damn good. Me, getting looks from a good number of people fans or not from my homemade t-shirt (including a member of the Hanson entourage...how do they manage to level you with just a look of the eye?) and not realizing it until then, my Ike tribute in clothing. The whole theatre raised on wooden flats that, when the crowd got going (and you know they did) it lurched under our jumping weight and you had to either hold onto a seat or join in. Taylor looking pissed because they had to end the show early (thanks Chicago curfew) and giving it his all in the encore "In The city" by jumping off of the piano and into a mock-splits (so fucking awesome) and Ike sliding on his knees, visually pleading "Do you love me?" Feeling the sense that they were really truly sorry it had to end so soon. (Kiley)
Outdoor theatres are my favorite. I remember thinking Taylor looked amazing. The stupid place cut the show to only an hour and I hate them forever for it. Chicago is beautiful, and by this city, sadly I was ready to go home. That changed when they took to stage, it always does. I also recall thinking Tolcher was good for the first time in Chicago. Not bad. (Priscilla)
August 2nd Minneapolis, MN - Quest
the incredible conversations I had in line outside the venue, the feeling I got all in my body during "dancing in the wind", like I was going to go through the ceiling and dance at the same time, finally figuring out that the thing poking me in the back was an ashtray, and that was why I had ashes on my shirt. never being so hot, soaked, exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. wanting the whole show to never end. standing outside the bus with natalia, popping her ears, having her call me "black magic woman" and proceeding to laugh at her. ac/dc will never be the same again. and finding out that taylor has the bluest eyes ever on record. (Meg)
August 4th Milwaukee, WI - The Rave
Arguing with pre-pubescent teeny-boppers over my paid balcony seat, being pointed out physically by Taylor twice during the show for not clapping, watching the sea of people below me having the time of their lives but wondering why all the people in the balcony stood there glumly (and even fucking SAT DOWN!!!???). Hanson, again, giving their all...seeing the electric slide on "Shake Your Tail Feather", totally losing inhibition on "Lost Without Each Other" and dancing like mad, and clapping like crazy to "Man from Milwaukee" considering you know, it's our song and all. (Kiley)
August 5th Kansas City, KS - Uptown Theater
Naked sculptures; broken balcony; and fat ass Ash G running around. Awesome solo from Zac singing "Lulla Belle", and girls screaming for him during the song. Little tot about 2, dancing around mom and dad, both fans, stole the show. Isaac playing Next Train over Hand in Hand, disappointing, depressing. (Jen)
zac wasn't quite himself. i sat next to my mother in the back of the floor level right in front of the girl who won the interview, with her friend who commented on my "muggle" tshirt and pointed out her pin saying the same. bonding with people who have loved the same band i have for years. beer and smoking in the lounge with members of the road crew. (Daisee)
August 7th Tulsa, OK - Cain's Ballroom
Meeting Carla, Alicia, Lux, Shaz, Brandi, Shay, and other random people. Seeing embarrassing moments from Taylor falling on his ass while on top of a grand piano. Mack and his family members dancing around, playing air drums in sync with Zac. Taylor hanging from the support beams above, and Zac singing a song I didn't know. (Jen)
This concert was different for me in a lot of ways. First of all it was the first time I was really attending a Hanson concert (after fame at least) with real fellow Hanson fans and not just friends from school that I'd dragged along. I got to go with my friends from online: Brandi, Carla, Jen, and Shay. I met a lot of cool people like 3 of Shay's friends; April, April, and Sarah. This concert was great because it brought me a great week of meeting and hanging out with great friends, but the concert itself left something to be desired. They weren't holding my attention like they usually do. There were some great moments though. Like when Isaac came out for his solo and asked us to vote on what song he should sing. I believe the choices were Love Song, Call Me, and Being Me. Being Me won. It was the one I wanted to hear since I had seen him perform the others before, though I did kind of want to hear Love Song. Another great moment (as it always is) was "In The City" Taylor was going wild. He was jumping up on speakers and at one point he swung from the rafters. He was climbing back onto his piano and slipped and fell and tried to cover it up by falling to his knees and running is hands through his hair. It was hilarious. At the end he lay on the floor for a really long time. I couldn't see what was going on because I was in the back, but I figured he was just being dramatic or he had worn himself out lol. (Alicia)
Cain's Ballroom: huge, historic, amazing, the energy of the crowd was so real, it had a taste. There were moments that felt so intimate and comfortable, but then there were moments that reminded me that they were rock stars. The metal ceiling supports were low and just over the stage. And during In The City, Taylor stepped up onto the drum riser and leapt up into the air, grabbing the edge of joist, swinging out over the crowd. I think everyone in the room took a collective breath, only letting it out when Taylor's feet landed safely on the stage. (Stephanie)
August 8th Tulsa, OK - Cain's Ballroom
Interestingly enough, I discovered that it's possible to do two shows, two nights in a row, to essentially the same crowd and make them feel totally different. When Taylor vaulted himself onto his grand piano, his foot caught and he sat down with a mighty bang onto his keyboards. Seriously, I don't think that boy knows what it does to our hearts when he launches himself off that piano. And I don't think he cares. This shows highlight came long after the show was over and my friend and I continued our conversation with a radiant Diana Hanson. She looked at Amy and I and told us how proud she was of Zac for standing at the edge of the stage and playing guitar. She had never seen that before, didn't even know that he could! The surprise and pride was visible on her face. (Stephanie)
August 11th Kalamazoo, MI - State Theater
The last time I was in the State Theatre was several years ago to see Jonny Lang. I noted that he is scheduled back for October. The colorful mermaids, grape vines, Grecian women with orbs in their palms . . . a true Hanson Underneath aura.
Unfortunately, the show had not sold out, but it was only evident in the back of the balcony. The Kalamazoo Gazette is directly across the street from the State Theatre . . . I realized it was a wonderful gesture to have promoted the concert as Hanson approached town.
As I bid farewell to the Underneath Tour with this concert, I was completely satisfied. I could have left the show after "Believe" and I would have been happy. The band had come within an hour of my home . . . I left overcome.
P.S. From the state theatre setlist:
Every Word I Say: Secretly and groundlessly, I felt like this inclusion was personal wish-fulfillment as I had hoped to hear it at the Navy Pier. It doesn't sound quite polished in concert--almost as if playing it loud is an attempt to make up for what it lacks in practiced flair. All the more endearing to me. (Jackie)
August 12th Chicago, IL - House Of Blues
Really disappointing. They played maybe an hour and I was pissed off that they had to choose that night to be pissy- that night when I had my older sister and male friend- both of whom I really wanted convinced of Hanson's greatness. Didn't happen. Ike completely fumbled on "Call Me" and the night was full of numerous other cringe-worthy errors. I choose to forget that I spent way too much money on a plane ticket and passed up more time with my friends and family to see the worst Hanson concert of all time. (Carrie)
Pissing down rain like it's the flood, freezing my ass off standing for five hours, soaked and losing practically all feeling left in my body--- but having amazing best-friend like conversations with random people who I end up standing near in line. Getting inside HOB and aimlessly opting to go to side right bar I could get into because I’m old, and getting the perfect fucking seat in the entire house (next to standing in the very front in the middle) making all the pain and the coldness worth every single minute of it. Having again, best-friend like conversation with three girls who drove all the way from NYC to see Hanson for their first time on the electric tour and intermittently letting them lay all over me just to get a glimpse of Zac who was pushed so far fucking back. Protecting my mother from crazy-really old-drunk lady, who though knew the words (somehow), fell on her TWICE. Watching Zac keep his eyes closed while singing "The Walk", blocking everyone out and seeing him truly smile at the impromptu encore "Magic Carpet Ride" with Ingram Hill. Also, amusedly watching new NYC friend booty-block Michael Tolcher's crotch (yes he hung out right behind me most of the concert) smiling ear to ear with a drunkenly "God I love Hanson’s Fans" grin, and noticing Taylor give many random annoyed stares in his direction (also finding that all it takes is a little sumn-sumn to get him to crack about Hanson's hotel whereabouts; a little booty gets you a long long way). Playing only for an hour...because of (thanks again Chicago!) fucking curfew. But, walking all the way to their hotel in hopes to see them and then randomly meeting up with our NYC friends again by coincidence. (Kiley)
heehee what can i say about this concert. me and 6 friends got a room at the HOB hotel and went in at the end of the line. we stood in the back and danced and sang loud waving our glowsticks like crazy. I got my hanson hoodie and earrings at the end. the best part of the concert was hearing the crowd sing along. afterwards we got to party with the Tolch in room 737!! Our room...if you were there you know! (Lauren E.)
August 14th Columbus, OH - Newport Music Hall
This show had a dreamlike quality to it. The songs moved from one to another so seamlessly. There was nothing that made me go wow during the show. I was worried that I was becoming jaded. But after the show, I moved in for the kill. I wanted Taylor to sign my cast. I smiled at him and said, "I'm sure you don't remember me..." He squinted at me and said "You're Stephanie, right?" I didn't know how to react, so I didn't. (Stephanie)
August 15th Sylvania, OH - Centennial Terrace
We sat on white patio furniture with a gazebo behind us- as if we were hanging out at the country club about to see a local country singer. But instead Hanson took the stage and sounded as wonderful as they could in an outdoor setting that wasn't really ready for their rock & roll show. "In A Little While"- absolutely breathtaking and Natalie (to whom Taylor dedicated the song) came and danced beside us. I think my favorite part of the show was "Love Song." Ike was really into it and he sounded amazing. And I had the time of my life dancing like a mad woman with Jacki and Michelle. My parents also came along and were both impressed with the improvements the guys had made since they went to a TTA show with me 4 years earlier. (Carrie)
Stupid DJ's piss me off. That's all I have to say about that. But for me, this was the perfect show. Standing outside under the stars, the sound was perfect, the setlist was perfect. Taylor again sang Love Me just for me. There may have been more people there but it was for me. No really, it was. But then right after that song, Hanson made me love them even more than I ever thought possible. After dedicating the song to "my wife who I adore entirely," Taylor started to sing In A Little While. As the opening strains of the U2 song floated out to me, I did something I never thought a concert would make me do. I gasped and put my hands to my mouth, tears welling in my eyes. No one can ever tell me that Hanson aren't the real thing. (Stephanie)
August 17th Wallingford, CT - Oakdale Theatre
I gasped and laughed at the same time when Taylor got pulled off the stage at the end of the show after grabbing some fans hands. He promptly pulled himself back up on the stage with the help of security, I think. Silly Taylor.
Zac was very quiet throughout the show, except when telling us to be mellow for his solo, and at the end of the show he spoke, and of course everyone went crazy.
Isaac was usual Isaac - "This goes out to all of the pretty ladies in Connecticut." he said before Crazy Beautiful.
I'll never get over hearing old school Hanson in 2004 - Minute Without You, Look At You, Speechless.
Before starting to play Every Word I Say, they said they usually don't take requests, and then went into it. The crowd was insane. (Melissa)
JAMES, this is where James, the coolest hotel guy ever, was. I don't know why he was so cool, he just was. I also had the sneaking suspicion that Tyler Hilton, or at least his family, was staying at our hotel because why else would a whole family, complete with elderly people, be wearing Tyler Hilton t-shirts? Anywho, we went to the venue and a girl came up to us in the parking lot with a petition to get Hanson to play Every Word I Say since they had conveniently begun playing that AFTER the east coast shows (bastards). I excitedly signed and went inside. We ran into some friends from NY1 and Philly. Talked to Kate a bit while buying merch and said some stupid things (the Hanson excitement was getting to me). We went inside and found our seats. Chatted with Nikki a bit. Natalie came out to watch some of the opening acts and just kind of stared at us all and made us uncomfortable. She also came out and danced to Optimistic which was cute. We were right by the door that goes to the outside where the buses were so all sorts of important people kept walking by. Such as Michael Tolcher with a bunch of underaged girls (ew..). Wallingford was an AMAZING show. Great setlist. THEY DID EVERY WORD I SAY. Which was, you know, the high light of my life. I died and Priscilla was worried. But it was amazing. And then I was wiped out for the next couple of songs. I couldn't fully enjoy Look At You which sucked, but my messed up state made Tightrope even more magical. Zac had us sit down and I closed my eyes for a while. Such a beautiful voice that boy has. They also did Speechless for the first time! (At my shows, I mean.) And Taylor did indeed do the "YEOW!" What else? OH they did the AC/DC cover which was great. I liked their version even better than the School of Rock one. heh heh. After the show... kind of sucked Hanson-wise. But I had fun standing around in my birthday hat, talking to friends. (It was Priscilla's 18th, you know). We had a gift bag for Taylor/Zac (whoever we could get closest to) but they didn't come out. Psh... and then as they were leaving, everyone surrounded the bus which disgusted me a little. So we left... I hope they didn't have too much trouble leaving. (Liz)
August 19th Toronto, ONT - The Docks
The crazy bus driver screaming at some lady who was making it so he couldn't back up. Getting a bracelet for alcohol. The crowd was so happy and I was so upset because I was way off to the side and Katie didn't want to move and I couldn't see and wasn't having fun. Leaving by myself to wander the crowd. Beginning to memorize Tolcher's setlist and his "ad-libs" and getting annoyed by the bitchy new merch girl. CRIED. Busting the guy outside who was selling illegal Hanson merch. (Erin)
We got to this show and it had already started. We didn't miss Hanson though, just some of Tolcher. They did Cried for the first time! Too bad I couldn't remember the words to sing along. Zac mentioned me before his solo. "Someone told us we weren't playing enough songs off the new album, so here you go" and proceeded to play Broken Angel, my favorite song off the Underneath CD. (Katie)
crazy taxi driver, sleeping on the street for the first time.. FOR HANSON! :D wristband #45, meeting Abby, 3pounds of candy, making fun of this insanely obsessed fan who rented a tour bus and thinks she's ezra's mom (and other crazy shit like that..) and laughing about how taylor said THAT'S BEYOND OBSESSION. to her face at muchmusic when rick told him about her (I would have died if my idol had told me that! but seems like she was PROUD?! *she was bragging about it!!* o___O I’m sure deep down she just wanted to slit her wrists heh. :P), having a nice chat with kate, passing out before the show and waking up to taylor's voice, getting pizza + hug from him :D also taylor telling me how cool he thinks HTP MAGAZINE is, w00t! BEST SETLIST EVER! THEY PLAYED CRIED!! AND ZAC'S SOLO..BROKEN ANGEL.. CRYSTAL CLEAR, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I'VE EVER HEARD. standing on 6feet tall boxes with a 7years old girl who was living her first hanson experience.. it felt like we were almost sitting on stage. we could see the whole crowd, everything on stage.. even zac behind his drums! <3 meeting erin sincelastjuly and katie zacbop after the show and having this guy arrested for using monica geist's stolen artwork to make his unofficial hanson merch. (Claudia)
August 20th Ottawa, ONT - Civic Center
OVER FOUR HUNDRED EXITS FROM TORONTO TO OTTAWA. the meet and greet being so fast that it's all a blur now, except for the party when I called Zac a pimp and got a hug from him because I had a "comfortable hoodie." The sheer oddness of Hanson playing in the same place as a flock of sheep. The amount of fans who hadn't seen Hanson since 1997, and getting flashbacks to 1997 after a teeny painted "Hanson" backwards on her cheek. The crowd swarming and getting in last and still being first row on Zac's side. The radio DJs playing "tipsy" when Michael Tolcher walked on stage, and Michael Tolcher singing along. Having Michael Tolcher's speech to the crowd completely memorized. Being able to move around in the crowd and walk around and even sit in the back of the arena, leaning against the barricade before the seats, and sitting back there by myself, singing along to Look at You and Speechless and having a blast. Having a random roadie hand me a setlist without me even asking, and seeing through the slit in the backstage curtain to watch Kate flail her arms in an attempt at dancing. Katie and I protesting Penny and Me by head banging, Afterwards, hanging out by the barricade, and having the local fans not even know that Taylor was married, and having to explain how Zac met Kate and Taylor met Natalie and that Isaac was now a bitch. Having Isaac further prove his bitchiness and having Zac prove how fucking cool he was by signing pretty much anything, and having hilarious conversations with random girls on phones and even talking to the guys down at the end who just wanted his autograph for ebay. "I'll take your picture and email it to you" "Don't do it, she just wants your email for some kind of LIST!" and "Ooooh, he's writing a last name" "Sometimes you have to do that if you think that they don't know who's autograph they're getting." Taylor coming out and saying that he's "just trying to do my job." Having the best night in a long time. STAYING IN THE OTTAWA JAIL HOSTEL AND ACCIDENTALLY WANDERING UP TO DEATH ROW. (Erin)
Front Row. Fun. I was making faces with Zac for a while, until Kate showed up and stole my thunder. They sang Cried for the 2nd time, I still didn't know the words. They also started with Optimistic again and that just doesn't get me into the show. After the show, well before the encore, we ran over to the bus and met the guys. I got a photo with Zac, and Isaac after freaking arguing with him for one for like EVER. I also got a set list from a random roadie. (Katie)
calling emilie on her cell to find out hanson is standing in front of her. running around like a headless chicken lol. taylor hanson staring at us running down the hill.. lol. me being blind and not noticing until someone told me he was in front of me. haha. me thanking him for feeding me in toronto and having him say no worries! ;) we have to feed those HTP reporters! aww. taylor flipping off "the machine" :P interviewing michael tolcher, attending his sound check and getting front row places for the show. hanson fans were extremely nice that night (I left/lost my dictaphones and htp binder in the seat area, so I had to go get it.. and when I came back they let me go back to my front row place o.O I didn’t even have to push!) , zac looked like a puppy in heat the whole time.. mouthing "I love you"s to kate and dedicating his solo to her. meeting jessica hanson at the merch table and having her thank me for the gift and admitting she's a bubblicious addict lol. meeting hanson after the show, having them sign autographs, take pics and everything. isaac singing to me in french, zac goofing around with me and other fans.. talking on meg's phone. zac telling those non-hanson fan guys he preferred spending time with us than them. <3 :P (Claudia)
August 22nd Portland, ME - State Theatre
I thought that Zac sounded especially good at this show. Need You Now was my favorite song of the night. I enjoyed seeing Zac play the guitar and it was also the first time I got to hear one of his solos without fans screaming through the entire thing. The cover of It's A Long Way To The Top stood out as well. I loved it when Taylor tried to get the crowd to sing along and nobody knew the words. I looked up the lyrics when I got home and I was sad that I didn't know they included "gettin' stoned" and "doin' one night stands" while they were singing it. (Mandy)
This show was cool because we got to go to the handicapped section, and sit on stools the whole show and still could see over everyone. The stools spun around so I had some fun spinning during the not so fun songs (need you now, being me, penny and me) I also met Tyler Hilton and fell in love. They did Man From Milwaukee which I hadn't heard yet! After the show like a million and one girls were by the bus so we left and drove back to CT and I fell asleep, even though I didn't want to because I wanted to tell directions. Oh well. (Katie)
Having a roped off section and stools, and getting to sit back and chill. Being able to buy a soda in a concert venue for less than $2. Hanson starting with ROCK AND ROLL RAZORBLADE <3 and You Never Know! Katie and I protesting Penny and Me this time by spinning around on our stools and getting sick. Seeing Ezra walk by himself beside Natalie. Ditching Katie and joining the crowd to freak out over In The City, and the security being Nazis afterwards. (Erin)
August 24th Scranton, PA - Scranton Cultural Center
Hanson fed off the crowd's and we whored off of theirs. They started with an extremely pumped version of "Rock 'N Roll Razorblade". I never liked that song until I saw them perform it. Just...I can't even put it into words how great it was.
I squealed when I heard the opening chords for "Every Word I Say". I loved during Zac's solo ["Broken Angel"] when he told the crowd to stop screaming that they listened to him, for the most part. I was just in awe of "Hand in Hand". They played a great deal of songs from "Middle of Nowhere". As much as I love hearing new material, I was thrilled with the older stuff. I guess it's the whole familiarity thing again. They even ended with hyped up performance of "In the City", completely with jumping and Taylor crawling all over speakers, followed by "Hey" as an encore. I liked the whole, "And you say..HEY!", thing they had the crowd do.Best concert in my whole damn life. (Stefanie)
"You guys, are the best thing" (Priscilla)
By far the most fun friend-wise. Lots of watching the bus from afar. IANAHSOTBAWS. ;0) The venue was super pretty and had little old ladies as security by the doors. I went over to the Ingram Hill both and bought underwear (because who DOESN'T need a pair of super cheap underpants that say "Ingram Hill" on them?) and annoyed the guy by asking to see 3456347 different sizes in the t-shirt before settling on one. We also gave Jessica our letter of suck up-ance. ha. After Ingram Hill's performance (which was wonderful), we went over to get autographs. Can't forget Kirsten giving Justin Moore her number. hahah. So, the show! The laaaast show of the tour. A bit heartbreaking at times but fun none the less. We had our own little group off to Isaac's side and that made it better. Speaking of Isaac, he started his solo off with some unrecognizable song that no one really talks about... but it was pretty. They did Every Word I Say again, and it wasn't quite as powerful as the first time but it was amazing anyways. OH, and they opened with Rock & Roll Razorblade! That was another song on my list of things to hear this tour. I enjoyed watching Zac head bang. And they did Runaway Runnnnn! Another one on my list. And it ended with Hey. A nice way to end the tour. (Although I'm getting a bit choked up thinking about it so lets move on). After the show... nothing much happened. We watched from afar. Contemplated going to Pittsburgh butttt... didn't work out. I think it's for the best. (Liz)
August 25th Pittsburgh, PA - The Rock
After a summer of seeing Hanson, me and my best friend (HI MEL) decided to go to Pittsburgh. I actually dragged her and my ex boyfriend, but either way. We went. We brought Ian, who had been our mascot since the tour back in March. Ian is this thing, and the only true reason we went 7 hours from home was to give this... creature to Hanson. We finally made it to Pittsburgh, expecting a miracle or something. We sat by the bus all day, waiting for Hanson to emerge from hiding, but all that we witnessed was Natalie being harassed by some 12 year old boys! We amused ourselves by walking around this.. neighborhood, pretending like we had just met Taylor (my ex, doing a great "EXCITED!" face). Then, we finally went in, and stood on a booth that some friends had saved for us. We threw things at some girl during Zac's solo, because she was blocking my view. We cried, screamed, and danced, because this was our last show. And then, too soon, it was over, and we emptied out of this tiny club. We waited by the bus with what seemed like a thousand people, and eventually gave up. Following that, the night was hell, and I didn't talk to anyone until we got pizza at a rest stop the next morning. PS - Ian is probably sitting in Mel's house as we speak. Thanks for caring, guys! (Kir)
August 27th Louisville, KY - Kentucky State Fair
Listening to the guys sound check "Rip It Up" over and over and over again as we sat and watched three men put horseshoes on a horse. There was a near silent crowd for Zac's "Broken Angel" and Isaac came out wearing a white towel around his neck before playing "Being Me." He talks too much before he does his solos, he needs to shut up and sing. The catwalk. Every Hanson concert should occur at a venue equipped with a catwalk. Enough said. Cotton candy, Ferris wheels, and Hanson. It doesn't get much better than that. (Heidi)
August 29th Houston, TX - Verizon Wireless Theater
There's nothing like the anticipation of a new show on a new tour, even if the music has just changed in mode and not melody. There's also absolutely nothing like sharing a show with someone who feels the exact same things in the music as you (swaying with my best friend Amanda to "I Will Come To You") or someone you can laugh with at your own made up lyrics (turning "Penny & Me" slightly dirty with my music buddy Mel). Hanson is always best when shared with your closest friends who have been in it with you since the beginning. There's just something about those boys and their music that brings my best friends and I together, and I'm glad I have that. (Claire)
August 30th San Antonio, TX - Sunset Station
This show will be forever fixed in my mind as the one where Zac single handedly brought me to tears by playing "The Walk." Just a few weeks before the line 'don't lose yourself in your fear' became a sort of universal truth for me when I began panicking about moving to a new school in a new state where I knew no one. It sounds kind of dumb, but this one little line gave me the strength I needed to not be afraid to completely change my life, and hearing it live a week after doing so struck a chord with me and I couldn't help but be moved by the passion in his solo performance of it. I am forever grateful for those five minutes. (Claire)
August 31st Dallas, TX - Nokia Live
The great thing about going to multiple Hanson shows is going on the night they finally play the songs you've been dying to hear. The dallas show was lucky enough to get the much covetted "Every Word I Say," which I had been anticipating for the past three days. Zac started in on the drum beat and I knew immediately what they were about to play. That audience was also treated to the full-band version of "Crazy Beautiful," another anticipated song. Despite a bigger theater, a ruder crowd and the end of the tour finally in sight, this show was packed with so much energy that no one could help getting out of their seat and, as Taylor instructs us to do, shake their ass. (Claire)
September 30th Denver, CO - Paramount Theatre
There were so many things to be excited about that day. There was the fact that I was going to a show on the electric tour for undertneath, the entire street team was there working as one to promote, I was taking my sister to her first concert, I had my best friend with me but most of all I had finally won the one thing so many fans desire...I had a Meet and Greet pass. My meet and greet was wonderful, a dream come true, but it was over so fast. I did however give Isaac something to think about with my remark about how the guys need to go bar hopping with the street team to show how much they love us, I think he was kind f surprised by it.
The one stand out memory I have of the concert that night was they way you could tell the difference between the old fans and the new ones. The old ones were the ones that were doing the ever classic "Where the love?" dance, swinging their arms above their head at the "round and round" part of the chorus. It was fun reliveing those memories of my early teen years, the thing I enjoyed the most was seeing fans from the early days and people that had just become fans all in one place, rocking out together to a kickin' band. (Christina)
zac sang "in a way" for the first time, i was so blown away by the chorus that i texted it to my friend just so i coul dhave a copy of it. being hit in the fact repeatedly by a girl in front of me with a glow stick, and continuously having to claw my way through her hair. silly drunk boys who ended up getting us pushed to the front. sweat drenched, drinking a margarita and three glasses of water at chili's on the 16th street mall, hoping the boys would stop in. (Daisee)
October 2nd Las Vegas, NV - House Of Blues
Sin City, what a fantastic place. The true highlight for this show took place the morning of the show as I had breakfast with Taylor, Natalie and Ezra. But still, what a great show! They were all so very there and present. But when Zac moved over to the piano for his solo, I was blown away. His voice made me gasp. The new song was so strong and so powerful. As he sang In A Way, I realized what an amazing musician and songsmith he was becoming. (Stephanie)
October 3rd Pheonix, AZ - Marquee Theater
They were late, as usual. Like an hour and a half late. The fans were really annoying but some were hella cool. A lot more guys there than I has assumed. Odd. Taylor, I think was really stoned or drunk or something... he cussed as well. Made me feel better. :) They put on a great show, can't really complain about anything bad. (Margo)
October 6th Anaheim, CA - House of Blues Anaheim
At the Downtown Disney House of Blues, there is a window that looks down over the stage, directly onto Taylor's piano. I staked out that position early. And thank God I did. I watched EVERY note that Taylor played, watched how he pounds on the keyboards, watched how he moved. I can't tell you with any sort of certainty that there was anyone else beside Taylor on stage. But he was a God that night and I have the pictures to prove it. (Stephanie)
sitting upstairs at the bar that wraps around the entire upper level was pure genius because not only could we drink, but we also got to sit when we felt like it. plus, tall stools are always fun. the set was insane, and at one point, natalie and ezra came and sat right in front of us, which was interesting because she kept staring at us. granted, we were dancing like crazy people. i was disappointed that zac didn't play his new song as his solo, but it was good times anyway. great view of the stage, good friends, and awesome music. brandi carlile opened on all the california dates, so this was her first show and we were all blown away by her talent, so i bought her cd. i highly recommend it to everyone. (Catherine)
The first show I had been to in four years. I really didn't know what to expect. It felt good to see my friend Shelby again (who I had last seen four years prior at the Wiltern show on the TTA tour!) and Catherine and Stephanie and others. :D I cried during "Dancing in the Wind" for some stupid, fannish reason. Probably had to do with an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia and love. (Abby)
October 7th West Hollywood, CA - House of Blues Sunset Strip
Have I mentioned that they've become true rockstars? Well, if I haven't, let me just reiterate... THEY ARE ROCKSTARS! From beginning to end, this was seriously one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to (and that is saying something, I've been to literally hundreds of concerts). The energy coming off the stage was huge and contagious. We also talked our way into VIP. So, we danced and sang and had better seats that "Weird" Al, who was standing behind us. I will never forget when they started playing Long Way to the Top. On stage, there were five guitarists: Isaac, Aaron (the backup), Pete (the bassist), David Garza, and Taylor. Taylor was standing on his grand piano with his red guitar slung low on his hip. Then, the truly memorable moment came after the bow, Taylor lifted his shirt and rubbed his nipple. What a fitting end to my summer of Hanson! (Stephanie)
when we pulled up to the venue for this show, we got some of the dirtiest looks i've ever gotten in my whole life. i don't know what some of those girls' problems were, but they can all suck my left nut. anyway, we stood behind the vip section and were able to get the security guy to let us all in once the show had started. so, once again we had prime seating. the show was just as amazing as anaheim, but with a much higher energy level. taylor didn't do a solo in anaheim, and zac did lullabelle *again*, and ike did "call me" which i never really have liked very much, but whatever. i think the highlight of that show for me was their encore which was a cover of "it's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll." i about wet myself when they started playing that. weird al was standing right behind us during the show which was amusing. (Catherine)
Getting into the VIP section is a good thing. The energy at this show was so much better than Anaheim's, and it was nice seeing a full view of Taylor; he was wearing an "Are you listening?" shirt. There is nothing like singing along to "Thinking of You" surrounded by people you love, clapping and dancing. Oh, and Weird Al was behind us. He's got cool hair. (Abby)
October 9th San Francisco, CA - Warfield Theatre
oh man. for this show i made a shirt that says "i'm not listening" which of course was a joke, but once i got to the line i was too afraid of the crazy rabid fans who had wanted to camp outside the night before the concert. so, i just kept it on under my rancid t-shirt. we just kept getting really lucky with our standing/seating and were in perfect view of the stage. the show was wonderful, and taylor did "i will come to you" as a solo. zac once again did lullabelle (at this point i was starting to get annoyed with him for this). the great thing about this show was that on the drive up from LA shelby, holly and i were talking about all the songs we wished they would play, and they literally played ever single song we talked about. weird. the warfield is a beautiful venue so i think anyone who can should go see a show there. yes. oh yeah, holly bought a poster that was severly reggaed out. all red yellow green and black. since when did hanson become all bob marleyesque? (Catherine)
Man, a girl can say rather stupid things when confronted with one or more of her idols:
Me [tugging on the shirt that I am wearing]: Isaac! Can you sign my shirt! I drew it for you guys.
Isaac [looking at my shirt]: Woah, you drew that?
Me: Yup
Isaac: Wow, that's hot!
Me [as Isaac signs my shirt]: Thanks...you're hot, too, but I'm not sayin' anything....
What the hell was that supposed to mean, Monica? (Monica)
October 10th Sacramento, CA - The Empire
i would like to say how much i hate sacramento. everytime we got into the car we got lost. stupid sacramento. but man this show was fun. shelby, tahnie and i were drunk before the show even started, and spent almost the entire show dancing around like crazy. they a new cover "honey bee" by tom petty which was fun except for the lack of enunciation i had no idea what song it was until a few days later. once again, zac sang lullabelle...someone needs to talk to that boy about variety. the venue was cool, and when we were standing in line we could hear part of the sound check. that was fun. cute bartenders too...always a good thing. the show was bittersweet though because we knew it was our last one. the line to get into the show was also amusing because shelby and i were baked. good times ;) (Catherine)
November 2nd Copenhagen, Denmark - The Rock
We discovered that there was no opening act and they just played random music. Really really loud music. Mostly hard rock. (Alice Cooper "Poison" wooo!!) But then… "MmmBop" came on really loud, and everyone lost their minds. We all sang along and just-.. it may sound silly now, but you can't imagine the feeling when "MmmBop" is playing, and you know that they are going to be right THERE in front of you in a matter of minutes. It’s really an indescribable feeling, and it was just building up even more with every occasional Hanson song they played into the mix. There was also a big screen on the wall above us, where they showed what bands would be playing at The Rock (mostly death metal and hard rock). But every time you saw that Hanson add flash on the screen, you got just that one degree more excited. The craziness pretty much reached epic proportions, though, when we heard some muffled words spoken into a mic, coming from behind the curtains. It’s just like you know that they're right there, behind that damn curtain, and you're having troubles getting a grip. (Reet)
November 6th Manchester, England - Academy 2
Hanson in Manchester was like a homecoming for me - seeing them in a venue I've been about a million times without having to fret about buses, tubes, trains or directions, was definitely a brilliant feeling. The set list wasn't anything new but the guys had so much energy and the crowd was so fantastically enthusiastic that it felt like I was hearing all these songs again for the first time. Isaac's "Aint No Sunshine" was impressive as usual and Taylor's solo of "Crazy Beautiful" blew all my friends away, none of which, I hasten to add, are Hanson fans in the slightest. But, the highlight of the night was their encore of "Lost Without Each Other" - a delivery filled with so much excitement, enthusiasm and just sheer prescence that my best friend yelled "don't go!" at me at least 52 times that night! Brilliant, fantastic, amazing... oh and I got a M&G too =D (Gem)
November 8th Glasglow, Scotland - King Tuts Wah Wah Hut
Dream venue and a dream setlist. Although I was scared for my life in the queue (which I have to admit we just kind of pushed our way into (at the front, yeah... we're the people everyone hates)) the venue itself definitely made up for the lack of preparation for a Hanson fan assault. Seriously, it was worse than being stage side at an NSync concert. Anyway King Tuts is about 300 capacity, full of course, and makes for the most intimate of gigs. The guys were distinctly mellow and the set list echoed that with the big ballads being drawn out - "Broken Angel" "Never Let Go" "Next Train" and "Dying to Be Alive". It was a totally different gig and so worth the 500 mile drive, even just to hear Isaac bantering, at normal volume, with the girls at the BACK of the room! (Gem)
November 17th Melbourne, Australia - Hi-Fi
Seven years of waiting, seven years of tension, seven years of keeping the faith in the name of beautiful music was unleashed the minute they walked onstage. The screaming and the singing was oh-so-loud, but I wouldn't trade that kind of uplifting spirit for anything in the world. Our enthusiasm touched Hanson so much, that they played the songs we could all share in, like 'With You in Your Dreams', 'Hey', and a rowdy 'Lost Without Each Other'. Let me be a teeny for just one moment -- I am so listening. (Nyssa)
November 19th Sydney, Australia - SPACE
So much chaos in regards to getting front row, so many bad vibes, I wanted to cry. Instead, I remembered the myth about the best sound being where the mixing deck is. My friends and I, my girls, the people I share this tour with, staked out the back and never regretted a minute. Watching Taylor come out with an Australian flag draped around his shoulders like the god that he is is permently imprinted in my mind, along with all the anthems, flashbacks and sex-on-legs riffs. And then, Isaac promised it would never be four years wait ever again. (Nyssa)
April 7th Koln, Germany - Stollwerk
If there is one word to describe this concert with, it’s energy.
This is probably not that unique with Hanson, but this one being my first Hanson concert in the 8 years of me being a fan, I was, naturally, blown away and completely in awe.
From them unpacking their bus in that tiny parking lot, which entirely lacked any kind of barrier between them and the fans, to Taylor shouting and telling us to “Do what he says” (‘He’ being a security guy) when the mob went out of control just shortly before the doors opened, to the concert itself, this day was nothing short of amazing. Overwhelming even.
The memories are still very much fragmented, lacking order and resemble colorful pictures that flash up at me at the most random moments:
Zac’s smile that lit up the whole place and the mischief in his eyes whenever he destroyed yet another one of his drums. Taylor having complete control over every single person in the audience and randomly getting up to scrape confetti off the floor to throw at the crowd.
And Isaac’s discomfort at the camera being shoved in his face the entire time by the people in front of him. It was cute and adorable and it made me want to hug him and protect him from the evil that is the camera flash.
The only downside of this day was that I went completely unprepared and felt like I missed out on a lot of emotions and experiences. So, I hope that they come back soon, because, really, one concert is not nearly enough to grasp the complete and utter wonder that is a Hanson concert. (Dodo)
May 28th Sydney, Australia - Enmore Theatre
The floor shaking. Taylor's mic stand taking on a life of its own. Isaac getting pissed off at the screamers. The audience singing along during If Only and MMMBop. My first Hanson concert was the most amazing night of my life, and being lucky enough to meet them before the show was the icing on the cake. They are three of the nicest and most talented guys that I have ever had the honour of meeting, and I now have memories that I am going to treasure for the rest of my life. (Erin)
